So you’re moving into a new home. Pretty sure you’re feeling excited and eager to move in. But you could also be feeling overwhelmed with all the work involved. Are you packed and ready to go?
If yes, well, good for you! But if you’re still getting stressed out with all the boxes, packing tips for moving house and stuff you need to pack, then you don’t have to worry. We have some tips to help you!
Moving in is no joke, not to mention the packing process that comes with it, but you can still make it as painless as possible with these simple packing tips for moving!
Always pack one room at a time.
This will allow you to place the items that are needed in each room in their group.
Hack #1. Label each box or container.
If you’re that eager to move in, you might tend to place whatever you see in the first box you can use. All that to make packing easier and faster. However, to save yourself the time and effort label everything, that is label every packed container. For example, you can mark one container ‘Toys’ for the kids, another ‘Kitchen Utensils’ for the spoons, forks, and knives.
For a bonus tip, don’t forget handles for those large boxes. If you had purchased boxes for moving, punch out those perforated handles. If not, then cut out handles on each side of your larger boxes to make carrying and lifting easier. Just be sure not to cut those holes out too close to the top or else the box could rip, especially if the contents are heavy!
Hack #2. Snap pre-packing photos
If your television and computer connections are not color coded, then they can be tricky to remove and replace, especially if you’re not a techy person. Take a photo of it, and when the time comes that you need to get on with those wires and cords, you have a picture to help guide you.
There may be other things that you need to have a picture of to know how to put it back together so do take pictures to help you reassemble them.
Hack #3. Smart-organize small stuff.
Ziplock bags aren’t just for packing food, but also for storing your little items! You can use them for furniture screws. Picture hangers, and even small cords. Just put them into a bag and pack them with the things they go with or tape the bags onto the item they go with. For example, a clock with a pendulum may need the pendulum removed for shipping, so bag that piece and tape it to the clock along with any batteries that are needed, then when you arrive it will be easier to put back together.
Hack #4. Keep clothes inside cabinet drawers.
Just in case you didn’t know, your clothes are already packed! You can keep them that way, and wrap the whole thing with plastic wrap and you’re good to go! If it is just too heavy, then remove the drawers, but leave the clothes inside them, and place each drawer into a larger bag, like a garbage bag.
Hack #5. Use garbage bags for hanging clothes.
Of course, let’s not forget your clothes in the closets! Save time by clustering groups of your clothes together, then pulling the garbage bags from the bottom up, and tying them at the top. Note that twist ties work great for this easy tip.
Of course, you can also purchase a box from the local U-Haul Center that is made for transporting your hanging clothes; those boxes come with a bar, so you hang them up. Then when you arrive at your new home, the front portion of the box opens so you can retrieve those clothes very easily!
Hack #6. Use sheets, blankets, and towels as packing materials.
Save the cost and time of going to the store to buy more bubble wrap. Why exert too much effort when you have soft blankets, sheets, towels, and even socks to begin with? As they say, it’s like killing two birds with one stone! Consider packing both glassware and socks in one box, using the socks to stuff inside the glassware and also covering the drinking glasses to prevent them from bumping into each other and breaking.
If you don’t want to do that, then you can always use newspaper to pack those breakables or rent boxes from the U-Haul Centers for carrying them.
To prevent your liquid cleansers and toiletries from spilling over, consider uncapping them, then cover the tops with clear plastic wrap and tightly reseal them. Of course, they should be packed so that they are standing upright and close enough together that they cannot tip over. Then label that box so that it is only carried in an upright position. You’re done, and it’s spill-free!
Hack #8. Pack all essentials in one bag.
Most probably, you’ll be too tired to unpack everything immediately after you move in so have your essentials in one bag or box for easy access! These things can include enough utensils for use, change of clothes, and toiletries. That way when the day is over, and you are tired, you won’t have to unpack and hunt for those things that you need to use before going to bed.
If you have a moving company to transport your household goods, then you probably should consider having some items that are left for you to take just so that you know you have them when you arrive. Those could be things like your computer, your notebooks, valuable jewelry or special pictures/ paintings. Granted, the movers are insured and probably honest, but for your peace of mind, take those things with you instead of leaving them for the movers.
Oh, and don’t forget to hire a trusted professional cleaning service to aid you in your move in and out cleaning! Packing is already stressful, so why not ask for help? It’s worth it!
Happy moving!
